Leicester Soundmap

2012/03/04

I am currently working on a new project called Leicester Soundmap.

The project aims to raise awareness of the sonic environment and acoustic ecology by building a community which shares field-recording of various places in the local area. With these recordings the community will be able to build a soundmap of Leicestershire by sharing their content via the Freesound Project. The project also aims to get individuals to engage with the local sonic environment, and change the way they listen to sounds in general, by actively encouraging the community to experiment with soundscape composition. These compositions can then be shared with the community via a Soundcloud group.

If you live in the Leicestershire, or the project interests you in any other way then please check it out.

This looks really interesing. Last year I did a short video capturing the soundscape of Welford Road Cemetery (available here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattneale/5568944885). I’ll have to see whether I still have the sound files, and whether they can be uploaded to Soundcloud…

Hi Matt, that would be excellent. If you do manage to get the recordings up on SoundCloud then you can share them via our group. I very much enjoyed the video, and I find that place to be very peaceful. Thanks for sharing!

…on second thoughts, I could add a marker to the map that links straight to your video, rather than uploading a different copy. I think it will add a nice bit of variation the rest of the sounds. With your permission, I think I would like to do that, and maybe make a separate post about it on the main site. Would that be okay?
